GrowWater is a patented irrigation system developed by GrowCamp. The system can be used in all beds with a frame of 30 cm height.
The system consists of a 15 cm high water reservoir, which is placed as a separate unit at the bottom of the bed. The soil above is linked to the water through perforated tubes, which act as wicks. The wicks (capillary irrigation tubes) draw up the water and the moisture spreads to the entire bed.
There is room for 15 cm soil above the water reservoir. Instead of completely filling with soil, you can choose to use a grow bag, as known from the white polystyrene capillary boxes. But by completely filling the bed with soil, there will be room for the roots to develop naturally, so the plants thrive better.
The water is held inside a strong plastic sack, which has a drainage hose. The wicks stand on the plastic sack and hold up the base on which the soil lays. It is therefore important that the underlying layer of the bed is firm, smooth and without sharp edges and objects, which can damage the plastic sack which supports the wicks. It is therefore recommended that you place a plastic board, flagstones or planed wood boards at the bottom of the bed.
Adjustable water level
The irrigation system is provided with a patented device. This makes it possible to lower the water level to prevent the plants becoming too wet in the cooler growing seasons or in the start-up phase, where the roots have not yet developed fully. As we all know, plants don’t thrive with either too little or too much water. It is recommended that you only half fill the water reservoir, until the plants have formed a good root system. Otherwise, the soil has a tendency to become too wet – especially of course during periods of heavy rain. However, there is a lot of difference between different soil types’ capacity to draw up water, so it’s a case of trial and error. And it’s easy with GrowWater, where the water level can be lowered!
Filling with water
Filling with water is easy and quick using the large filler tube, which is equipped with a water level indicator.
